Chapter Seven

After Red finished caring for the horses in the livery, he returned to the house. He found Opal making biscuits for breakfast.

Ellie was in her highchair with two spoons and was happily pounding away on

the tray.

Red walked over and sat next to her. “Hi there, sugar plum. How’s my sweet girl this morning?”

The baby grinned. She had three teeth now. One of her upper front teeth had broken through the surface and shined brightly in her smile.

“Hey, did you see her new tooth?” Red picked up the spoon Ellie dropped and handed it back.

Opal ignored him.

Ruth came into the kitchen and looked back and forth between the two before frowning at Red. “I don’t know what you did, but you better fix it.”

Red furrowed his brows. “What makes you think I did something?”

His mother lifted one eyebrow and put her hands on her hips. “You’re my son and a man. Of course, you did something.” She walked over to Ellie and sniffed. “You, my darling granddaughter, stink. Time for a diaper change.”

He grinned and then stood. “You’re just in time. I was hoping one of you would change her. I was going to do it myself, but I was not looking forward to it.”

Ruth picked up Ellie from the highchair and left for the bedroom and the baby’s clean clothes and diapers.

Red walked over to where Opal was rolling out the biscuit dough. He put his arms around her waist.

“Don’t touch me.” Opal stiffened in his arms.

He didn’t remove his arms. Instead, he pulled her gently back against his chest and put his chin on her shoulder. “Honey, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have laughed. It was your first time and, regardless of how it looked, I should have just helped you up. I really am sorry.”

She began to turn in his arms.

He loosened his hold so she could.

Once turned, she looked up at him. “Do you mean that?”

“I do. I was wrong.”

“Okay. I forgive you, but I want you to let me milk the cow without interference. I’ll make mistakes, and I don’t want you laughing at me when I do.” “I’ll never laugh at your efforts to milk the cow again. I promise. May I have a kiss to seal the deal?”

She gazed up at him for several moments. “You may.” Opal wrapped her arms around his neck.

Red waited to see if she was really amenable to his kiss.

“Well, are you going to stand there all day or kiss me?”

He smiled at his feisty little wife. “Kiss you.” Red lowered his head and pressed his lips against hers.

She opened her lips a little and ran her tongue along the seam of his lips.

Red smiled and opened for her.

He didn’t know how long they kissed, but they were still kissing when Ruth returned with Ellie.

Red and Opal parted. He looked down at his passionate wife and smiled.

Ruth held Ellie on her hip. “I’m glad to see you two have made up. Red, take your daughter so I can help Opal with breakfast.
